Quick Summary, To start, Dani (Florence Pugh) is having issues with her sister and her parents. Dani’s boyfriend, Christian (Jack Reynor), does not seem to worried about what is going on. He is even seen having a discussion with his friends about how he has wanted out of this relationship for almost a year. When Dani learns about Christian’s trip with Josh (William Jackson Harper), Mark (Will Poulter), and Pelle (Vilhelm Blomgren), he is sort of forced to invite her along in the hopes of her declining. Dani heads over with Christian where the rest of the gang learns of the new addition. Josh and Mark don’t seem to enthused with her coming along, but Pelle seems excited to have a new guest. Pelle takes the gang to his Swedish hometown for some sort of festival. With a mix of Dani dealing with family issues and just a weird environment to start, things start to take a turn. What seemed like a nice summer getaway turns into a bizarre ritual with the help of the hometown cult.

Midsommar is… an experience. As I kept watching this film all I could think was, “What is happening??”. This is something that I definitely recommend seeing in theaters, I can not emphasize that enough. The whole story is grounded in a sense of reality, with the main focus being on Dani and Christian’s relationship. They think maybe a trip to Sweden could salvage an already broken relation, but it gets much worse than just a “bad relationship”. Ari Aster also threw in some amazing visuals and shots. There is this one shot as they are driving to the festival that I thought was just beautiful. He also did a great job with the light areas and making a beautiful place feel so off.

All of the actors in this movie brought their all, I thought. Most of all, I thought Florence Pugh had an amazing emotional performance as Dani. I felt that Pugh did a good job in Fighting With My Family, but she totally stepped her game up and brought it all for Midsommar. By the time award season comes around, if Florence Pugh is not nominated for something I will be a little upset (but not enough to start a hashtag or something). Jack Reynor also did a pretty good job. The only thing I had saw him in before was Transformers: Age of Extinction, so going in I did not really care for him, but he really turned my opinion around. Just goes to show you that you shouldn’t base your opinion on one example. The other side actors did a good job in their roles and made this movie much more believable.

Overall I thought Midsommar was an excellent second showing by Ari Aster. I really hyped myself up before seeing this, because I really enjoyed Hereditary and thought it was twisted and creepy, and I thought both of those things after seeing Midsommar but I just felt it was lacking something. The little review snippets I saw before made it seem like it would be much scarier than I thought it ended up being. It’s more of just a what the heck is going on type of movie, making you unsettled by the end at what you just witnessed. I wasn’t scared just more disturbed by it I guess you could say. I still recommend seeing this in theaters because it’s an experience you do not want to miss.
